Problem Statement
In Malawi, top-down development approaches have historically ignored local voices—especially those of women and youth, who make up over 60% of the population. This disconnect has led to a web of systemic challenges:
- Over 4.4 million people face food insecurity (MVAC 2023).
- Malawi ranks among the top 10 most climate-vulnerable countries. Cyclone Freddy displaced over 650,000 people.
- Over 50% of learners drop out before completing primary school. Many schools lack qualified teachers, basic materials, and safe infrastructure.
- Rural areas remain critically underserved in both healthcare and education, worsening inequality.
These issues are interconnected. A weak education system limits opportunity, fuels poverty, and hinders communities’ ability to adapt to climate shocks or innovate.
Yet across the country, grassroots leaders are building transformative, community-led solutions. What’s missing is sustained investment, recognition, and platforms to scale their work.
Without a shift toward community-driven, regenerative development, Malawi risks remaining trapped in cycles of underdevelopment and aid dependency.
